Second phase of Ahmedabad Metro approved

India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has approved the implementation of the second phase of Ahmedabad Metro project, which will connect Gandhinagar to Motera.
The second phase of the metro project comprises two corridors with a total length of 28 km. The value of the project is USD 777 million (Rs 5,523 crore).
The 22.8-km Corridor 1 will offer a rail connection from Motera Stadioum to Mahatma mandir and Corridor 2, from GNLU to GIFT City, will have a length of 5.4 km.
The implementation of the project will provide the much-needed additional public transport infrastructure to Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar.
In March, the city will inaugurate the 6.5 km stretch from Vastral Gam to Apparel Park, part of the East-West Corridor, from Thaltej Gam to Vastral Gam, totaling 20.5 km.
In 2016, Metro Link Express for Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad (Mega), the Indian mass-transit operator, launched the construction works on North-South Corridor (APMC to Motera Stadium) corridor with a length of 17 km. Siemens was awarded a EUR 76 million contract for the electrification of the 39.2-kilometer first phase of Ahmedabad metro. Siemens is responsible for the complete electrification of the new double-track metro line and will also provide a Scada (supervisory control and data acquisition) system for monitoring and controlling the traction power.
For this phase, Hyundai Rotem will have to deliver between April 2019 until July 2020 the needed trainsets under a USD 159 million contract awarded in 2017. The new metro cars will operate the East-West line which is about 20.5 km with 17 stations.
