RZD and CargoBeamer to develop piggyback transport

The Deputy Managing Director of RZD, Alexey Shilo, and Marcus Fischer, the CFO of Germany-based CargoBeamer company, signed a MoU to jointly develop rail freight transport between Europe and China, via Russia. In addition, the two companies will create new logistics products in Russia using CargoBeamer technology, designed for piggybacking. This technology enables high-speed loading and unloading and secures rail transport of road freight trailers through the use of special wagon platforms and transshipment equipment.
The parties intend to jointly identify railway stations suitable for the use of the technology, to certify CargoBeamer’s wagons for operation on the Russian railway network, and to develop an optimal list of services provided for Europe-China routes.
Piggyback transport will not only increase the volume of rail transport, but also take the load off the roads and reduce the impact of heavy vehicles on road infrastructure and the environment.
The signing of the MoU took place in Sochi, during the international railway forum PRO//Movement.1520.
