Russia to develop its first hydrogen train

Russian Railways, Rosatom State Atomic Energy Corporation, Transmashholding and the representative of Sakhalin Region signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the production of trains using hydrogen fuel cells.
Under the agreement, Transmashholding will be responsible for train production, Rosatom State Corporation will be the hydrogen supplier, due to competencies in the field of hydrogen production using the capacities of Russian nuclear power plants.
While Russian Railways considers this project as an important step to tackle environmental issues, Sakhalin Oblast will have the role in the pilot process, organising passenger traffic using hydrogen trains.
The project is planned to be implemented in stages, starting with a feasibility study and adopting decisions within the entire life cycle of the project. Comprehensive tests will be conducted, followed by compliance process with safety requirements.
The project envisages the creation of a competence center with the aim of developing and subsequently extending organisational and technological solutions in the Sakhalin Region.
