Romania: Km.614-Gurasada and Gurasada-Simeria rail sections receive EUR 2 billion financing

On 23 November, Romanian Ministry of Transport, as Intermediary Transport Body, signed the financing application for “Rehabilitation of Frontiera Curtici-Simeria railway” project part of the pan-European Corridor IV for the traffic of trains at the maximum speed of 160 km/h, section 2, Km.614-Gurasada, and section 3, Gurasada-Simeria, submitted by CFR SA, as beneficiary of non-reimbursable financing allocated within the Operational Programme Large Infrastructure 2014-2020.

The total cost of the project is RON 9.5 billion (EUR 2 billion) and will be financed through the Operational Programme Large Infrastructure 2014-2020 as follows: 75% of the total approved eligible costs, RON 6 billion (EUR 1.2 billion) respectively will be allocated from the Cohesion Fund, while the rest of the financing worth RON 3.5 billion (EUR 757 million) will be granted from the state budget. We recall that on 31 August 2017, CFR SA and FCC – Astaldi – Convensa consortium signed the contract on the rehabilitation of section 3 Gurasada-Simeria.

Also, on 17 February, Astaldi SPA- FCC Construccion-Salcelf Construzioni Edili e Ferroviare SPA- Thales Systems Romania consortium was selected winner of section 2 rehabilitation contract, Km.614-Gurasada.

The main objective of the financing application is represented by the modernisation of 141 km of railways on Radna – Gurasada –Simeria section in order to improve the maximum operational speed to 160 km/h for passenger trains and 120 km/h for freight trains and will, therefore,, help reduce traveling time between Simeria and Arad from 146 minutes to 74 minutes. The project implementation period is 111 months, from 1 January 2014 to 1 March 2023.
