Riga’s new Central Station, part of Rail Baltica, has reached another important milestone in its construction, with the completion of the façade and the glazed roof on the southern side of the building, as well as the installation of decorative and functional elements. The work was carried out by the BERERIX consortium, and the station has now taken on the architectural form envisaged in the design, previously seen only in the presentation renderings.
The total glazed area of the new building is 1,500 square metres. The façade is constructed from high-quality glass structures and incorporates modern architectural elements, as well as integrated functional solutions, such as mounting systems for fire protection installations and for maintenance work at height.
The glazed structures for the façade and roof were manufactured in Italy, where they underwent strength and quality tests. These tests confirmed their resistance to air and water ingress, as well as to mechanical impact, guaranteeing their durability and suitability for Latvia’s climatic conditions, including harsh winters.
The new platforms are ready for use
In June, the main construction works on the three new passenger platforms were also completed. Access routes have been fitted out and lifts installed at both ends of each platform, so that passengers can access them directly from ground level.
The passenger infrastructure has also been completed, including modern and functional canopies, architecturally integrated with the station building and extending to the entrance and exit on Timoteja Street. These also feature glazed elements that complement the overall design.
The platform surfaces are finished with porcelain ceramic tiles with an R11 anti-slip rating, manufactured in Europe and specifically designed for outdoor use. These offer high grip in both dry and wet conditions and are widely used in railway stations across Scandinavia and other European countries due to their strength, durability and low maintenance costs.
Inside the new Riga Central Station, finishing works are continuing, alongside the integration of technical installations, safety systems and utility networks. At the same time, the BERERIX consortium has begun work on the square to the south of the station and the paving of the adjacent areas, with planting and landscaping work due to commence when weather conditions are favourable.
