RIA unveils new traction decarbonisation data tool

The Railway Industry Association (RIA) has launched a new interactive tool designed to support rail decarbonisation efforts, ahead of the Rolling Stock Networking (RSN) event in Derby on 3 July.

The RIA Traction Decarb Tool provides access to detailed data drawn from the association’s 2023 report, Delivering a Lower Cost, Higher Performing, Net Zero Railway. The tool offers rolling stock and decarbonisation insights, aiming to inform the development of the Government’s Long Term Rail Strategy and assist senior industry stakeholders.

RIA has been a consistent voice in the call for rail decarbonisation and electrification for more than five years, publishing a series of strategic reports and analyses. The launch of this tool marks a new phase in its advocacy, offering members and the broader rail community a resource to support planning and investment decisions.

“RIA continues its longstanding advocacy for a long-term rolling stock and decarbonisation strategy,” said Richard Carr, RIA’s Technical & Innovation Director. “The data gleaned from last year’s report has allowed us to create the new RIA Traction Decarb Tool to support both members and the wider industry.”

Looking ahead, RIA is also preparing to publish a new report, Decarbonisation Delivery Challenge, which will restate the economic and social benefits of a sustained electrification programme. The report aims to bolster the case for a coherent decarbonisation strategy aligned with the Government’s broader economic goals.

“RIA’s upcoming report will reframe the case for decarbonisation,” added David Clarke, Senior Technical & Innovation Advisor at RIA. “We hope it will support the Department for Transport in developing a strategy that aligns rail investment with the Government’s wider growth missions.”

The RIA Traction Decarb Tool is now live and will be presented at the RSN event in Derby, offering a timely contribution to ongoing rail policy discussions.
