Republic of Moldova buys 12 General Electric locomotives

The total cost of the vehicles amounts to EUR 45 million and, under the contract, the American manufacturer will deliver the first locomotives at the beginning of 2020. According to the tender book, the locomotives will have an engine capacity of 2 982 Kw and will meet all environmental standards. The locomotives will be used for railway freight transport.
The contract between Moldovan Railways and General Electric was signed on 6 November.
The procurement of new locomotives is included in the Restructuring and Reorganisation Programme of Moldovan Railways, financed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the European Union. The total cost of the project amounts to EUR 110 million of which EUR 5 million are grants from the Neighbourhood Investment Fund (NIF). Also, the Restructuring and Reorganisation Programme of the Republic of Moldova’s railway sector envisages the rehabilitation of the railway infrastructure. Therefore, another tender will be announced soon for the rehabilitation of Bender – Basarabeasca – Etulia – Giurgiulești railway.
