Renfe has presented six artificial intelligence projects developed under the first edition of its AI Laboratory, a cross-cutting innovation programme designed to test responsible, useful and scalable applications of AI across its operations. The company hosted a Demo Day in Madrid, bringing together technology firms, universities and representatives from Spain’s digital and mobility sectors.

More than 80 organisations participated in the call for proposals, with six selected to develop Proofs of Concept (PoC) using operational data and real environments within Renfe. Each project received €20,000 in funding, alongside technical support and access to the company’s systems and facilities.
The event was attended by Sonia Araujo, Renfe’s director general for Innovation, Sustainability and Digital Transformation, who joined members of the national technology ecosystem to review the results. The Demo Day strengthens Renfe’s position as a leading participant in public-private collaboration around digital innovation and smart mobility.
Six AI pilots addressing core operational challenges
The selected PoCs focus on key challenges affecting operational efficiency, maintenance, customer experience and safety.

A platform integrating internal and external data from the Operations Management Centre to provide a unified view of the network and anticipate disruptions. - Operations Management Centre assistant – PwC
An AI system that supports the resolution of operational incidents by identifying optimal solutions based on historical data and previous cases. - Digital assistant for employees – Aunoa
A generative AI conversational tool providing train crew with instant access to regulations, procedures and technical guidance. - Intelligent driving supervision – Dive-Tech
An AI model analysing driving patterns to identify opportunities for improvement and to support driver training.
Supporting Renfe’s digital transformation
The Demo Day marks the conclusion of the inaugural edition of Renfe’s AI Laboratory, an initiative created to explore new technologies, identify opportunities for improvement and support the progressive integration of AI across all areas of the business.
The programme has brought together universities, start-ups and technology firms offering solutions with operational, social and environmental impact. It aims to strengthen Spain’s innovation ecosystem while positioning Renfe as a driver of technological development within the rail sector.
Following the evaluation of results, the most promising projects may progress to implementation and scaling phases, with the goal of integrating them into the company’s wider technological infrastructure.
