Renfe has begun testing a Civia electric train in Bilbao, marking a new step in the process of modernizing the rolling stock used for commuter services in the Basque Country.
The Civia EMU is being tested on the C1 Bilbao Abando Indalecio Prieto–Santurtzi and C2 Bilbao Abando Indalecio Prieto–Muskiz suburban lines, part of Bilbao’s commuter rail network (Cercanías).
These tests represent a new step in the process of modernizing the rolling stock for commuter services in the Basque Country. The runs are strictly technical in nature and aim to verify the train’s performance both from an operational standpoint and in terms of compatibility with the infrastructure and specific conditions of the commuter rail network in the province of Bizkaia.
Renfe notes that this phase does not yet signify the introduction of the Civia trains into commercial service, but it will allow for the identification of any necessary adjustments before they are put into operation.
The tests pave the way for the modernization of the commuter train fleet
The launch of these tests is part of Renfe’s commitments to the Basque Government following the transfer of authority over suburban transport services in the Basque Country and contributes to the gradual renewal of the rolling stock fleet.
Civia EMUs are electric trains developed specifically for suburban transport in Spain’s major metropolitan areas. They offer high passenger capacity, low energy consumption, and an enhanced level of passenger comfort.
The rolling stock is equipped with low-floor design and dedicated spaces for passengers with reduced mobility, modern climate control systems, video surveillance, audio and visual passenger information systems, and other technologies designed to improve the reliability and quality of services.
Renfe will continue to collaborate with the Basque Government to implement the fleet modernization program, ensuring that the commitments made translate into tangible improvements in the services offered to passengers on the region’s commuter rail network. Testing the Civia train on lines C1 and C2 represents an important step in this process, which aims to develop a suburban rail system that is more modern, more accessible, and better suited to the population’s mobility needs.
