Railway PRO Summit: Alstom Coradia Polyvalent, the best trains for regional and intercity traffic

Alstom’s Coradia Polyvalent trains are perfectly adaptable to peri-urban, regional and intercity transport, according to the customers’ demands. The train length varies from 56 m, 72 m and 110 m. They have two types of motorisation: electric and diesel-electric (bimodal). The flexible demand of Coradia Polyvalent train allows the rail transport operator to choose the interiors according to preferences.

“A framework contract was signed in France for 1,000 Coradia Polyvalent Regiolis trains and 256 of these trains are part of a firm order for 12 French regions. The train has been developed due to the particularities of the French railway network and has been designed to run bi-modal, both electric and diesel-electric. It is the first train 100% certified under the requirements of the Technical Interoperability Specifications”, said Nicolae Dragu, Business Development Manager – Alstom Romania, during the Railway PRO Investment Summit, organised by Club Feroviar and Railway PRO with the support of the Romanian Railway Industry Association (AIF) in Bucharest on 3 and 4 October.

The trains have been operating in France since April 2014 and have been successfully sold in Italy and the Netherlands in the past two years. Those in Italy are capable to run at speeds of 200 km/h, while those in the Netherlands reach 160 km/h.

“We use the latest innovative technologies developed by Alstom for the Coradia Polyvalent trains. The train is equipped with asynchronous engines with permanent magnet and benefit from passive safety devices, such as shock-absorbent systems. The roof-mounted equipment ensures easy maintenance and reduces the noise and vibrations experienced by passengers”, added Dragu.

In Romania, Alstom uses a Coradia Polyvalent train for carrying out tests on the Corridor IV sections that the company modernises, under the contract signed with CFR SA. Thus, Coradia Polyvalent test train is equipped with the national signalling system, while the European signalling system, ERTMS Level 2, is currently installed. Thanks to its facilities, the train is capable to host an entire work team and carries out real-time tests and controls on the Romanian railway network.
