Railway Days 2014: “We cannot have efficient transport without modern infrastructure”

“Europe needs development and economic relaunch, while maintaining stability and creating a real transport market that facilitates trade. These are critical points for the EU economic development. Also, we have to try and improve railway transport. If we want to be a global player, the European transport market has to be united”, declared Mathieu Grosch, Coordinator for the Orient/East-Med Corridor, DG MOVE, at the Railway Days – the Wider Black Sea Area Railway Investment Summit, organised by Club Feroviar and the Romanian Railway Industry Association (AIF) on 7-8 October 2014 in Bucharest. The event was organised under the aegis of CER, UNIFE and ERFA.
Mathieu Grosch continued talking about the “European Infrastructure Package”, through which TEN-T and the Connecting Europe Facility provide EUR 33.2 Billion in the 2014-2020 programming period.
“Transport is a key source for the European economy. It contributes to creating jobs and to the competitiveness of the European transport market in report to the others. Thus, the transport systems in the European Union require EUR 1.5 Trillion by 2030, the need for investments in the TEN-T global network has been estimated at EUR 500 Billion by 2020, while the investment need in the TEN-T core network amounts to EUR 250 Billion by 2020”, added the DG MOVE representative.
