The Railpool Group, together with its maintenance subsidiary NTT, is expanding its train maintenance capacity in Sweden through an investment in the infrastructure at the Fjällbo depot in Gothenburg.
The project is being developed in partnership with Jernhusen and will contribute to the development of one of the most important railway hubs in the Västra Götaland region.

Gothenburg to gain new train maintenance facility
Jernhusen and NTT have signed a 20-year lease agreement for the construction of a modern wheel-lathe facility covering 1,100 square metres. It will be the first modern facility of its kind in the Västra Götaland region and will be operated by NTT.
The facility will be equipped with a “tandem” wheel lathe, allowing two wheelsets to be processed simultaneously. According to the companies, the technology will halve wheel-lathing times compared with traditional facilities, enabling rolling stock to return to service more quickly.
The facility will also support brake disc machining and will include facilities for locomotives and passenger trains.
Alongside construction of the new wheel-lathe facility, Jernhusen will electrify the Fjällbo area, which has lacked electrical infrastructure for the past 15–20 years. The new infrastructure will allow electric locomotives and passenger trains to travel directly to the depot and maintenance facilities without having to be replaced by diesel locomotives. Operators will therefore be able to avoid long non-revenue journeys carried out solely for maintenance purposes, reducing both operating costs and environmental impact.
Work on the new wheel-lathe facility is scheduled to begin in October 2026. Construction and electrification are expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2028.
The project represents the first stage of a wider development plan for the Fjällbo depot, through which Jernhusen aims to strengthen Gothenburg’s position as a hub for the sustainable transport of freight and passengers.
