After 18 months of intensive work, passengers can once again enjoy a modern, safe, and comfortable environment when travelling through this station. “The modernisation of Den Helder Zuid station is now completed, and the station is ready for the future,” said John Nieuwstad, construction manager at ProRail.

This significant project was carried out in close cooperation with contractor K_Dekker, who oversaw the design and execution of the station’s comprehensive upgrade. Den Helder Zuid station has been almost entirely demolished and rebuilt from the ground up. The underpass has been fully renovated, improving accessibility and aesthetics, while stairways have been redesigned to make movement easier and safer for all pedestrians. Safety measures have been enhanced through the installation of new lighting, and the addition of more sheltered waiting areas greatly increases passenger comfort. Special attention was also given to adapting the station for passengers with reduced mobility, ensuring inclusivity for all users.

Den Helder Zuid station, which first opened 44 years ago, was in urgent need of a full-scale refurbishment. The renovation addressed all key components, including platforms, structures, and station furniture, which had become outdated and insufficient for current needs. The modernisation not only revitalises the station’s appearance but also aligns it with modern standards for safety, accessibility, and sustainability.

Looking ahead, the Municipality of Den Helder plans to develop new residential areas surrounding Den Helder Zuid station. This initiative will create a vibrant community with easy access to public transport, encouraging more sustainable travel habits and enhancing the local economy. Future residents will greatly benefit from the improved rail connections, which provide a fast and efficient link to Amsterdam and other parts of the Netherlands.

The transformation of Den Helder Zuid station marks an important milestone in ProRail’s ongoing efforts to modernise Dutch railway infrastructure. It demonstrates a commitment to creating passenger-friendly facilities that meet the needs of growing commuter numbers and evolving urban environments. As public transport continues to play a crucial role in the region’s connectivity, stations like Den Helder Zuid will serve as vital hubs for sustainable travel and community development.

With the modernisation complete, Den Helder Zuid station now stands as a testament to effective collaboration between government authorities, contractors, and local communities. The station is no longer just a transit point but a welcoming gateway that supports both the daily journeys of commuters and the wider ambitions for regional growth and regeneration.
