Port of Rotterdam signs contract on Maasvlakte 2 workshop development

Locomotive Workshop Rotterdam (LWR), a joint venture from Siemens Mobility and Mitsui Rail Capital Europe (MRCE), has signed an agreement with the Port of Rotterdam Authority for the issue and development of a site on Maasvlakte 2. A workshop will be realised on this site to enable railway companies to carry out the required maintenance on their locomotives.
The workshop on Maasvlakte 2 will be part of a European network of maintenance workshops.
The joint aim of the Port of Rotterdam Authority and LWR to minimise the CO2 footprint will be realised via solar roof panels, which will provide 50% of the site’s energy requirements.
LWR will have the ground lease for the land as of 1 September 2018, when construction of the workshop will commence.
The Port of Rotterdam, particularly Maasvlakte 2, is an ideal location for the maintenance of locomotives that arrive there from across Europe. This means that long-term movements of locomotives for maintenance is no longer necessary, which saves time and costs. This workshop will optimise the coordination of rail transport and servicing.
