Poland’s Police Seaport to have a direct rail link

PKP Polish Railway Lines and the Port of Police signed an agreement for the creation of a direct railway link with the port. As part of the investment, from Police railway station to the port a track will be constructed and the traction network and traffic control devices will be installed.
The value of the investment is estimated at over PLN 122 million (EUR 28.47 million). Under the agreement, the costs will be covered by PKP PLK and Port Morski Police. As part of the investment, a new railway viaduct will be constructed, that will provide efficient and safe services with no restriction on road transport. According to the agreement, the project will be carried out in two phases. In the first one, the documentation will be prepared, which will determine the detailed scope of construction. The next stage will involve selecting the contractor and carrying out the construction works.
“It is a very important investment for us. The Port of Police is the fourth largest port in Poland in terms of the amount of cargo. The port handles almost 2 million tonnes annually. Thanks to the construction of a new track, the port will have a direct rail connection for the first time. We will be able to increase our transshipment capabilities for the benefit of the entire region,” Andrzej Łuc, the Chairman of Police Seaport said.
“The National Railway Programme, apart from typical passenger investments, is also includes railway projects that will enable efficient transport of goods. PKP Polish Railway Lines will implement the contracts related to the improvement of accessibility to the ports in the Tri-City (Gdańsk, Gdynia and Sopot ports), Szczecin, Świnoujście and Police. Joint investment with the Maritime Port Authority of Police will increase the possibilities of goods transshipment between sea and rail transport in the western part of the country,” said Ireneusz Merchel, CEO of PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe.
Currently, freight trains travelling on the Szczecin – Trzebież Szczeciński line to the port of Police, must pass through a station that is part of chemical plants away from the port. After the construction of a new track, the trains will have direct rail link to the port. The delivery of cargo will be more efficient, with additional capacity, as an increased number of trains will be possible. The competitiveness of rail freight will increase, which will bring economic benefits for the entire region. The planned project also creates additional development opportunities for Grupa Azoty as every year, the company uses railway transport to transport several million tonnes of products and raw materials.
“Seaports are crucial for Grupa Azoty because it exports its products and imports raw materials. With large purchases and sales, we are realizing that the developed port infrastructure allows us to achieve high operational efficiency, with less cost. It is obvious that we are interested in the development of seaports, and as a result, on the expansion into new markets, production security and better financial results,”said the President of Grupa Azoty, Wojciech Wardacki.
