Poland awards ERTMS contract

On January 5, PKP Polish Railway Lines and Thales signed the contract for the installation of ERTMS/ETCS Level 2 on the E20 Kunowice – Terespol section (excluding Node Warsaw) and for the supply of engineering supervision services. The value of the ERTMS contract is EUR 165.37 million (PLN 691 million) and with supervision, the value is EUR 169 million (PLN 707 million). Under the contract, within 61 months, Thales is committed to complete the documentation, construction works and to obtain all necessary permits for the use of the system.
“A modern ERTMS system on the international E20 route will ensure more efficient passenger connections and freight transport in Poland and in Europe. We also increase the level of safety on the railway network and create better working conditions for railway staff,” Ireneusz Merchel, CEO of PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe said.
The ETCS deployment on the Kunowice – Terespol section envisages the installation of traffic control devices on two sections of E20 mainline, one from Kunowice station to the Warszawa Gołąbki station, and the other one, from Sulejówek Miłosna station to the Terespol station. The project concerns 25 stations and five local control centers that will allow rail traffic control and increase the safety of rail services, including at rail-road crossings. The control centers will be constructed in Masovian Minsk town, in Błonie- a Warsaw West County, Opalenica-north-central Poland, in Zbąszynek-town in western Poland and Rzepin in north-western Poland.
The project has a European co-financing of 85 per cent through the Connecting Europe Facility, the third call.
In Poland, currently the ERTMS/ETCS is deployed on 331 km and, the company intends to install the system on 700 km until 2025. The ERTMS strategy involves the deployment of the system on 3400 km network.
In December 2016, the company announced two tenders of EUR 239.5 million (PLN 1 billion) for the deployment of ERTMS/ETCS on 1000 km of railway lines. They concern Kunowice – Terespol, Łowicz – Łuków and Podłęże – Rzeszów rail sections, on TEN-T core network.
