Philippines approves standard gauge for all new lines

filipineThe National Economic and Development Authority-Infrastructure Committee of Philippines (NEDA) has endorsed the adoption of a standard gauge for all future railway projects to improve the sourcing of trains and improve speeds.
NEDA deputy director general for investment programming Rolando Tungpalan said that this applies to government railway projects that would be carried out under the PPP scheme as well as other state railway projects having have other means of financing.
The NEDA Investment Coordination Committee-Cabinet Committee recently approved several modifications in the North-South Railway Project, that includes the shift from narrow gauge to standard gauge. This will rise the value of the project at PHP 170.7 billion (USD 3.64 billion).
Another approved project is the commuter line which would run from Tutuban, Manila to Los Baños, Laguna and the long-haul line from Los Baños to Sorsogon with a branch from Calamba to Batangas City.
