The first phase of a railway line connecting Iran’s Astara to Azerbaijan’s Astara and its terminal was inaugurated in the presence of senior officials of both countries. The project was carried out under an agreement between both countries’ presidents and with work of crews from both countries’ railway companies, Gilan Governor General Mustafa Salari said. The Astara – Astara border rail line links Iran and Azerbaijan with 1.3 km of new rail track and was funded by Azerbaijan. The total cost of construction for the line and for the Astara rail freight terminal was around 60 million dollars, according to Iranian Railways.
