Over 1,000 new regional trains: Trenitalia accelerates fleet renewal

Trenitalia, part of the FS Italiane group, delivered a total of 108 new regional trains in 2025 as part of a comprehensive rolling stock modernization program, with an investment value of approximately EUR  1 billion in the last year alone.

The program is part of the FS group’s 2025–2029 Strategic Plan and provides for the delivery of a further 103 trains in the coming years, so that by 2027, 1,081 new-generation regional trains will be in service. The total investment allocated to the renewal of the regional fleet amounts to EUR 7 billion, which will enable the modernization of approximately 80% of the current fleet.

Deliveries throughout Italy

The trains delivered in 2025 were distributed nationwide on the basis of public service contracts concluded with the regions and autonomous provinces, the authorities that order regional rail transport.

Of the total of 108 trains:

  • 51 were allocated to the regions of central Italy;
  • 25 went to the north;
  • 32 were delivered to the south of the country and the islands.

This distribution aims to strengthen regional services throughout Italy and reduce quality differences between the various regions.

Almost 1,000 new-generation trains already in service

To date, Trenitalia Regionale has put 643 new-generation trains into service, in addition to 335 previously purchased units, bringing the total to 978 modern trains already in service.

According to the company, upon completion of the program, Italy will have the youngest regional fleet in Europe, with an average age of less than 10 years.

Focus on technology, comfort, and sustainability

“The renewal of the regional fleet reflects the industrial capacity of Trenitalia and the FS group,” said Gianpiero Strisciuglio, general manager and CEO of Trenitalia.

He emphasized that the new trains are designed to offer higher standards of comfort, reliability, and energy efficiency, better meeting the needs of passengers who use regional services daily for work, study, or leisure travel.

Trenitalia provides extensive nationwide mobility through its regional service, with over 6,000 daily trips and approximately 400 million passengers transported annually.

The offer is complemented by approximately 180 intermodal “Link” connections, which combine trains with buses, ships, or other means of transport, facilitating access to areas less served by the classic rail network.
