Ontario launches RFQs for two metro tunnels

The RFQs issued outline the scope of work to design, build and finance the tunnels.

The Scarborough metro extension tunnel includes tunneling works for 8 km metro extension Kennedy station to McCowan Road, design and construction of launch and extraction shafts, tunnels and headwalls for emergency exit buildings stations. It also includes the supply tunnel boring machines and install segmental precast concrete tunnel liners as well as activities necessary to build the tunnel.

The Eglinton Crosstown West extension envisages tunneling works for 6 km if the 9.2 km LRT extension, design and construction of the tunnel, as well as for headwalls for emergency exit buildings and stations, TBMs delivery and all tunnel construction related activities.

The two projects are part of a strategy launched in 2019 which involves four metro projects. Planning is underway for all the selected projects, with the Ontario Line scheduled to be the first in service as early as 2027.
