Ontario awards Yonge North tunnelling contract

Canada’s Ontario government and Metrolinx have awarded a major construction contract for the advance tunnelling phase of the Yonge North Subway Extension, marking a significant milestone toward the start of full-scale works.

On August 6, North End Connectors was announced as the winning consortium in a competitive procurement process led by Metrolinx and Infrastructure Ontario. The team will design and construct the extension’s tunnels, supply tunnel boring machines, and build launch and extraction shafts. They will also deliver underground support structures for future stations and emergency exit buildings.

North End Connectors brings together firms with extensive experience in large-scale transit projects. The applicant leads and construction prime members are Aecon Infrastructure Management Inc., Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas Canada Ltd., and Ghella Canada Ltd., while design services will be provided by EXP Services Inc. and TYPSA Inc.

The Yonge North Subway Extension will extend TTC Line 1 service approximately eight kilometres north from Finch Station to Vaughan, Markham, and Richmond Hill. The route will include five new stations, with travel times from Markham to downtown Toronto expected to be cut by up to 22 minutes. A proposed transit hub at Bridge Station will provide seamless connections to GO trains, GO buses, and other regional and local transit services.

Preparatory works are already underway, including utility relocations along the route and early upgrades at Finch Station, which are substantially complete.

The Yonge North Subway Extension forms part of a once-in-a-generation expansion of the Greater Toronto Area’s transportation network. Together with new subway and light rail lines and expanded GO services, it will bring hundreds of thousands of residents within walking distance of rapid transit, providing faster, more reliable, and more connected travel options across the region.
