Omsan Logistics enters Turkey’s rail freight market

Omsan Logistics received the Certificate of Authority of Railway Operation and the Safety Management, by cooperating with Turkish State Railways. Thus, the company is the first private rail operator in Turkey. The Transport Minister Ahmet Arslan has attended the signing ceremony held between two institutions.
“Completion of the process of liberalization of railways, as one of the most important agenda items in logistics, is a pleasing development for our sector. Railway transport is a logistics model where the risk of failure is at the lowest rates. It has competitive cost outcomes and contributes to the intermodal transportation. Also, it is an environmentally friendly mode of transport. Considering these attributes, we will see the benefits of this development in both the sector and the economy of the country,” Hakan Keskin, General Manager of Omsan Logistics said.
For its railway activities, the company will lease 15 electric locomotives, 350 wagons with automatic unloading equipment from TCDD Transportation Co. and will employ 70 employees.
Starting November, Omsan will transport about 2 million tonnes of iron ore annually on a 550 km electrified line, from the loading area of Erdemir Madencilik located in Sivas/Demirdağ to Isdemir Facilities in Hatay/Payas.
According to the company, its annual rail transport market share will be 8 percent.
Omsan Logistics, a company owned by OYAK, is engaging in activities in the logistics sector offering domestic and international transport services.
Since June 2016, Turkey’s rail sector entered into liberalization process, as Turkish State Railways (TCDD) became the infrastructure manager, including the responsibility on traffic management. TCDD Tasimacilik was formed as passenger and freight operator, so private operators are able to access Turkey’s rail network. The liberalization has impact especially on freight sector, as it is as the core of national industry.
