ÖBB’s new Railjet M, tested in the climate tunnel in Vienna

ÖBB is testing the new Railjet M in the world’s largest climate and wind tunnel in Vienna under extreme conditions similar to those encountered on Alpine routes. The train, developed for interregional service in Austria, will be introduced on Interregio lines starting in 2028 and promises increased capacity, modern comfort, and performance under challenging operating conditions.

The tests include temperatures ranging from -25°C to +45°C, intense solar radiation, strong winds, snowfall, high humidity, and freezing rain. The goal is to verify the train’s behavior under real-world severe weather conditions, as they may occur in the Alpine region.

After each testing phase, specialists analyze components such as windows, doors, and technical systems to verify their stability. They also evaluate the restrooms and water systems, thermal insulation, air quality, and the vehicle’s energy efficiency under extreme conditions.

A train designed for Alpine routes

Railjet M was designed specifically for the demands of intra-Alpine rail routes. Steep gradients, winding tracks, and severe weather conditions require robust equipment and technical systems capable of operating reliably in all seasons.

ÖBB has ordered 31 trains from Siemens Mobility. The trains, approximately 106 meters long, will be accessible to people with reduced mobility and will offer 257 seats.

The trains will feature wider cars and a new interior design concept, creating a more spacious feel. Passengers will benefit from air conditioning, comfortable seats in second and first class, ski and snowboard racks, as well as bicycle storage.

Investments of over 6.1 billion EUR in rolling stock

Peter Hanke, Austria’s Minister of Mobility, stated that rail transport is an essential element in the transition toward more sustainable mobility.

“Rail is a key lever on our path toward the mobility transition. That is why ÖBB is investing over 6.1 billion EUR by 2030 in the purchase of more than 300 new trains. Thus, the Railjet M will enable greater capacity and comfort on intra-Alpine routes in the future,” said Peter Hanke.

Klaus Garstenauer, a member of the ÖBB Personenverkehr management team, stated that the Railjet M is the vehicle of choice for the new organization of intra-Alpine long-distance rail transport.

“Through the Interregio lines, we have reorganized intra-Alpine long-distance rail transport. The Railjet M is the vehicle chosen for this purpose. Tests in the climate and wind tunnels ensure that our trains will withstand even extreme weather conditions in the Alpine region and offer passengers modern comfort for long-distance travel,” said Klaus Garstenauer.

Siemens: Trains Like “Computers on Wheels”

The Railjet M is part of the Mireo family developed by Siemens Mobility. Tanja Kienegger, CEO of Siemens Mobility Austria, described the new trains as flexible vehicles, suitable for both urban areas and operation in Alpine regions and on cross-border routes.

“With the Mireo trains, we are bringing the latest generation of trains to Austria. As flexible vehicles, they are ready for both urban environments and alpine areas—including cross-border operations. At the same time, they are computers on wheels: thanks to their diagnostic capabilities, they will have high availability and be particularly economical to operate,” said Tanja Kienegger.

Entry into service in 2028

The Railjet M will be introduced in 2028 on Interregio routes, where it will contribute to the modernization of intra-Alpine rail transport in Austria. ÖBB is counting on a combination of technical reliability, energy efficiency, and enhanced passenger comfort.
