Austrian Railways (ÖBB) has announced that the main work on the electrification of the Mattersburg line will begin in early February, following the completion of preparatory work on the project. The intensive phase of the main work will start in February, which is why the line will be closed.
Due to the electrification work on the Mattersburg line, trains on the REX93 and R93 lines between Wiener Neustadt and Deutschkreutz will not run between February and December 2026. An alternative bus service will be organized to replace them.
The railway infrastructure will be upgraded not only on the main west-east and north-south routes, but investments will also be made in the regional train network. In Burgenland, work is underway to increase the attractiveness of the Mattersburg railway. The project will also include the construction of a second line on the sections from Wiener Neustadt Hbf to Katzelsdorf and Loipersbach-Schattendorf. In addition, a number of level crossings will be removed, and some existing ones will be rehabilitated and equipped with automatic barriers, while the Wiesen-Sigleß and Mattersburger viaducts will be adapted to accommodate the overhead system that provides electricity.
ÖBB will build the technical rooms required for transformer stations and technical buildings (electronic signaling stations) in stations, modernize drainage systems, and install cable ducts, pipe routes, and energy and lighting systems, and will build Park&Ride and Bike&Ride facilities as part of the modernization work in five stations.
Almost 143 million EUR will be invested over the next few years. The electrification of the Mattersburg line will be completed in 2027, when the stations and stops will also be completely modernized and adapted for access by people with disabilities, and the tracks will be renewed.
By modernizing the railway infrastructure, ÖBB is offering an attractive alternative to individual transport and increasing safety by replacing level crossings with underpasses. Investments are also being made in modernizing stations, adapting them for accessibility, and setting up Park&Ride and Bike&Ride facilities for a more comfortable transfer to the train.
These investments bring more comfort for passengers, lower emissions and reduced noise, and significantly improve regional transport. Overall, they represent an important step towards sustainable mobility and increasing the attractiveness of Burgenland as a place to work and live.
