ÖBB new trains offer a new way to travel

Viaggio ÖBB trainSiemens Mobility has published some photos for the interior design of the future Viaggio ÖBB train which will bring more comfort to passengers. The passenger cars will be manufactured at Siemens factory in Vienna.

The passenger coaches will be manufactured at the Siemens factory in Vienna, Austria.

The train is part of a EUR 1.5 billion framework agreement signed in 2018 with a first call for the delivery of 8 nine-car day trains and 13 seven-car night trains. The framework agreement can also be extended beyond 2023 by ÖBB.

The 8 trains will have a total capacity of up to 700 passenger coaches, while the night trains will have 100 seats and 160 couchettes.  The first train is expected to enter service in 2022.

The day train is designed as a low-floor coach with extra-wide doors to facilitate quick and comfortable boarding and alighting. The trains will be equipped to meet the needs of passengers with limited mobility.

The Viaggio coaches offer improved energy efficiency, achieved through such features as LED interior lighting, air conditioning with a heat pump function in both cooling and heating modes, as well as a fresh air supply regulated by the CO2 content in the interior air.

The Viaggio ÖBB train allows highly flexible configurations that cover all operating requirements. They will be operated with ÖBB’s current fleet of Taurus locomotives, manufactured by Siemens Mobility.

Viaggio coaches will provide modern, safe and comfortable long-distance transport services. The new trains will be operated in Austria, Germany, Italy and Switzerland. If needed, there is an option to equip the coaches for use in Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia.

To offer increased capacity and comfort, ÖBB is intensively collaborating with Siemens Mobility. This year, the Austrian Federal Railways ordered 11 additional Desiro ML Cityjet trains which will bring to a fleet of 200 such trains.
