Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) and Stadler have signed a framework agreement for 36 new FLIRT trains, supporting the operator’s plans to expand capacity and improve comfort across the Dutch network. The new fleet will enter service in 2030 and will be built entirely at Stadler’s facility in Siedlce, Poland.
Under the agreement, NS will receive 18 four-car and 18 six-car FLIRT units. The operator says the additional trains will help meet rising passenger numbers in the years ahead, particularly on busy regional and commuter routes. The order also builds on the long-standing relationship between NS and Stadler, with 134 FLIRT trains already in service in the Netherlands.
“Reliable and modern trains are important to us”
Wouter Koolmees, CEO of NS, said: “We are delighted to continue our collaboration with Stadler and to introduce these new sprinter trains in the Netherlands. It is important to us that these trains are reliable and modern. They are suitable for various routes and services. This means we are well equipped for the future and can continue to meet the changing needs of our passengers.”
Versatile design suited to multiple service types
According to Stadler, the new trains offer the flexibility required for both local and intercity operations.
“Nederlandse Spoorwegen was looking for a modern vehicle for local transport that could also be used as an intercity train. The FLIRT train impressed NS with its modular and versatile concept. Passengers can look forward to a comfortable, bright and well-designed train. I would like to thank NS for their trust and look forward to continuing our collaboration,” said Ansgar Brockmeyer, Head of Marketing & Sales and Deputy Group CEO at Stadler.
Focus on comfort, accessibility and interior design
The new FLIRT units will feature a spacious, accessible interior layout with dedicated areas for luggage, bicycles and pushchairs, as well as seating spaces for passengers with reduced mobility. Real-time passenger information, clear signage and a calm onboard environment aim to enhance the overall journey experience.
The lighting system will automatically adapt its brightness and colour temperature based on outdoor conditions, the time of day and the season, creating a pleasant travel atmosphere.
Stadler is engineering the fleet at its Prague site, with full production taking place in Siedlce, Poland. The new trains are scheduled to begin operating on the NS network from 2030.
