Aerial view of Dutch train at a bridge crossing a canalDutch rail company NS has denied claims in the British press that it is cross-subsidising its Dutch services with British taxpayers money. NS has received nearly €920m so far in British government subsidies to run several rail services in Britain. NS subsidiary Abellio runs Abellio Greater Anglia and, together with Serco, the Merseyrail and Northern Rail services. According to NS spokesman Eric Trinthamer, the company makes “a very modest profit on its English contracts of about 3%”. A Deloitte report for the Dutch finance minister last year also said there is no evidence of cross-subsidies.
