NJ Transit is assuming responsibility for the operation and maintenance of the 55 km River Line from Alstom, following several years of close collaboration to assess the conditions necessary for this transition.

By the end of this year, NJ Transit will take full control of both the operational and maintenance aspects of the River Line. This mutually agreed decision reflects the evolving investment requirements of the service, which now extend beyond the original scope of Alstom’s operations and maintenance contract. The transition will better position NJ Transit to shape and implement the next phase of development, ensuring the continued strengthening and enhancement of the service.
Alstom remains fully committed to ensuring a smooth and secure handover and will continue to support NJ Transit through its involvement in other ongoing initiatives — notably the manufacture and delivery of hundreds of new multilevel commuter rail cars, the first of which are expected to arrive from mid-next year. Both NJ Transit and Alstom value the strong partnership they have built over the years and look forward to continuing their collaboration on projects that deliver safe, reliable and innovative public transport for New Jersey and the wider region.
The River Line is an interurban diesel light rail service, exhibiting characteristics similar to commuter rail. It connects the cities of Camden and Trenton, running parallel to the Delaware River and serving New Jersey’s capital.
The line was originally operated by the Southern New Jersey Rail Group, a joint venture comprising Bechtel and Bombardier Transportation. Once services commenced, Bombardier became the sole stakeholder in the group. Following Alstom’s acquisition of Bombardier Transportation, responsibility for the line passed to Alstom.
NJ Transit operates a comprehensive public transport network across the state of New Jersey and also serves parts of New York and Pennsylvania.
