Trenitalia, part of the FS Group, has unveiled its new-generation Frecciarossa 1000, which entered service with a preview trip on the Rome–Naples high-speed line ahead of its official launch on Sunday, 28 September.

The rollout is part of a EUR 1.3 billion investment in 46 new high-speed trains, with deliveries scheduled at a rate of ten trains per year through 2029. The programme underlines the FS Group’s 2025–2029 Strategic Plan, which prioritises fleet renewal to deliver modern, innovative, and sustainable services.
The presentation was attended by Stefano Antonio Donnarumma, CEO and General Manager of the FS Group, and Gianpiero Strisciuglio, CEO and General Manager of Trenitalia.
Next-Generation Frecciarossa 1000: designed for Italy and Europe
Developed by Hitachi Rail and produced at its Pistoia and Naples plants, the new Frecciarossa 1000 trains are designed for both domestic and international service. They are compatible with seven European rail networks – France, Spain, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Belgium.
The trains are certified for a maximum speed of 360 km/h and will operate at up to 300 km/h in regular service. A new advanced traction system improves efficiency and energy management, making the trains technologically superior to the existing fleet.
Enhanced sustainability
Sustainability is at the core of the new design. The trains achieve a recyclability rate of 97.1% and a material recovery rate of 98.2%, both improvements over the previous generation.
Energy-efficient electric motors further reduce consumption, supporting the FS Group’s wider environmental commitments and the transition towards lower-emission transport.
Passenger comfort and design
While retaining the iconic Frecciarossa 1000 exterior design and livery, the new generation introduces updated interiors and digital systems.
Key features include:
- High-quality materials and ergonomic seating solutions
- Restyled interiors to create more welcoming environments
- Advanced digital platforms for travel management and passenger information
The updates reinforce the Made in Italy identity of Trenitalia’s flagship service, combining technical innovation with Italian design flair.
With 36 trains currently on order and an option for ten more, the new-generation Frecciarossa 1000 will play a central role in Trenitalia’s high-speed operations in Italy and across Europe.
