Three of Poland’s leading universities and the railway manufacturer Newag have signed a letter of intent to establish a science and technology center dedicated to the development and commercialization of quantum technologies.
The initiative aims to transform Kraków into one of the most important quantum computing hubs in Central and Eastern Europe, capable of accelerating research, innovation, and technology transfer to industry.
The agreement was signed by the Kraków University of Technology, Jagiellonian University, AGH University of Science and Technology, and rail vehicle manufacturer Newag. The goal is to establish a joint entity to coordinate research projects, develop infrastructure, and attract national and international funding.
The new hub will bring together the expertise of the three universities in fields such as quantum physics, computer science, applied mathematics, bioengineering, chemistry, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and advanced computing systems. Through this collaboration, the partners aim to develop technologies with practical applications in industry, medicine, energy, transportation, and data protection.
Quantum technologies are considered one of the most important areas of global development, as they enable calculations that are impossible to perform with conventional computer systems. They can accelerate the discovery of new drugs and materials, optimize energy and transportation networks, improve cybersecurity, and contribute to the development of much more efficient industrial systems.
“The collaboration between our universities and Newag represents a major step toward building one of Europe’s most important centers dedicated to quantum technologies. Newag’s involvement is particularly important because it demonstrates that the business community understands the strategic importance of quantum technologies and is willing to support this field both scientifically and financially,” said Andrzej Szarata, Rector of the Krakow University of Technology.
A Partnership Between Universities and the Railway Industry
A key element of the project is the involvement of Newag, which will serve as an industrial partner. The Polish manufacturer will help identify commercial applications for the technologies being developed and will provide financial support for the project, facilitating the transformation of research results into marketable products and solutions.
“This agreement concerns the implementation of quantum technologies in research and the development of standards in this field. Newag has committed to financially supporting the project, providing an excellent example of a public-private partnership. The educational and scientific potential of Kraków’s universities will enable the development of the most advanced quantum solutions in Poland,” said Piotr Jedynak, Rector of Jagiellonian University.
“The academic community in Kraków has demonstrated remarkable maturity by bringing together the three major universities in a joint project. “We want to be the business catalyst for this technological revolution and contribute not only with funding but also with our experience in commercialization and business development. Together, we can create a European center for quantum technologies in Poland and open a new chapter for the high-tech industry,” said Newag President Zbigniew Konieczek.
