Newag hybrid multiple unit for PKP Intercity

The first Newag hybrid multiple unit for PKP Intercity was presented at the factory in Nowy Sącz, Poland, during a technical visit by the Minister of Infrastructure, Dariusz Klimczak, and members of the Boards of Directors of PKP Intercity and Newag.

These are trains that combine electric and diesel propulsion, allowing them to run on both electrified and non-electrified lines. For passengers, this mainly translates into shorter travel times on routes where it was previously necessary to change locomotives. The vehicles are designed to reach speeds of up to 160 km/h on electrified lines and up to 120 km/h on non-electrified lines.

Four combustion engines, compliant with the Stage V emissions standard, and a dedicated power supply system give the new Newag hybrid multiple units a range of up to 920 km on a single tank of fuel. The vehicle manufacturer has prepared a design for PKP Intercity that allows for the installation of an alternative, emission-free energy source. The technical solutions and systems implemented on board ensure a high level of operational safety, guaranteed, among other things, by ETCS.

Each of the new trains will offer a total of 179 seats, of which 156 are in second class, 21 in first class, and 2 are dedicated to people with disabilities. The trains will be equipped with air conditioning, ergonomic seats, electrical outlets, and USB-A and USB-C ports next to the seats, as well as individual lighting.

The trains will include an area for families with children, equipped with tables with game boards and storage space, spaces for transporting bicycles without having to lift them, a dining area, vending machines, a quiet area (available in both classes), and a separate compartment for the control team.

The introduction of new dual-traction hybrid trains will significantly increase access to long-distance rail transport in many regions of Poland in the coming years. For approximately 70 localities, the number of rail connections will at least double, and the improvement in transport services will affect approximately 3.5 million inhabitants. The new trains will also enable the return of long-distance trains to 14 localities, some of them after a break of up to 40 years. These measures are part of PKP Intercity’s long-term strategy, which aims to reduce transport exclusion and provide residents of small and medium-sized towns with better access to the labor market, education, and healthcare.

The first Newag hybrid train for PKP Intercity will be delivered in 2027 and is part of a contract worth PLN 3.36 billion (EUR 798 million) for the delivery of 35 hybrid multiple units. These will be delivered by the second quarter of 2029.
