New trainsets for Moscow Metro

Moskva-2020 cars This year, Moscow Metro will receive 337 new Moskva-2020 cars forming a fleet of 44 trains, which will enter passenger services on the lines 6, 5 (Circle Line) and 11 (Big Circle Line). 105 cars will operate the Circle Line, while the remaining 232 units will be deployed on the line 6 and Big Circle Line.

Moscow’s Deputy Mayor for Transport Maxim Liksutov said that the implementation of the metro train fleet renewal programme “reduced the average age of trains from 22.5 years in 2010 to 15 years today. Currently, Moscow Metro is the global leader in terms of pace of rolling stock renewal.”

The Russian capital acquires rolling stock and other urban transport vehicles under life cycle contracts which implies that manufacturer is responsible for both supply and maintenance for 30 years. This model allowed not only to improve the quality of service, but also to save approximately 15% of expenses.

Since 2014, Moscow Metro saved RUB 4.5 billion (USD 60.6 million) due to the life cycle contracts concept.

The new Moskva-2020 cars entered service in October 2020. They offer broader gangways and wider doors (of 1.6m) and d new multi-language interactive route planners. Instead of plug doors, the new carriages will have sliding doors with more reliable servo-drives. Door wings will have bright LED strips to indicate that the doors are opening or closing. A new system will prevent passengers from getting trapped when the doors are closing.

They also provide 368 USB sockets, compared to 72 in previously Moskva models, and has noise level reduced by 15% in comparison with previous models. For the first time in the Moscow Metro’s history, the name of the route’s terminus will be displayed on the sides of carriages. This will help passengers avoid traveling in the wrong direction, a common occurrence.

In 2020, the city’s administration has announced that will purchase new metro trains for the Circle, Big Circle and Kaluzhsko-Rizhskaya lines.
