New Stadler trains for Madrid Cercanías ready for service

Renfe is nearing the end of the acceptance process for the new Stadler trains for Madrid Cercanías, which will become the largest units in the Spanish operator’s entire rolling stock fleet.

The entry into service of this new fleet is expected by the end of summer, following the acceptance of the first 5 units in the coming weeks, the completion of operational simulations, and the training of drivers.

The new trains will be approximately 100 and 200 meters long and will increase capacity by 20% compared to the existing fleet. They will feature single-deck and double-deck cars and will be more accessible, better connected, and more sustainable.

These are the first units of a total of 79 trains contracted by Renfe from Stadler, in an investment of over EUR 1.3 billion. This operation is part of the fleet renewal plan, which calls for an investment of approximately EUR 3.5 billion to purchase new rolling stock for both Cercanías and Rodalies.

Stadler Trains for Madrid Cercanías

The new Cercanías trains from Stadler will have the highest capacity, with up to 912 seats in the T100 models and up to 1,884 seats in the T200 (20% more than the current capacity of the Civia trains, the largest in the company’s fleet to date).

The company expects to receive the first five trains (three 100-meter and two 200-meter units) in the coming weeks. Following delivery, commercial simulations, tests under various operating conditions, and driver training will be conducted, with service entry expected by the end of summer.

The initial destination is the Madrid Cercanías network—the capital’s commuter rail system.

Starting with these initial deliveries, shipments will continue monthly until the delivery of nine T100 units and eight T200 units is completed by 2026.

Stadler multiple units are high-capacity trains that combine single-deck and double-deck cars and are adaptable to variations in ridership, as both configurations can be extended in length as needed, allowing for adaptation to changing demand.

The trains are compatible with the Iberian gauge and can reach speeds of up to 140 km/h.

Accessible and Comfortable Trains

These high-capacity, reliable, and fully accessible trains represent an important step forward for daily mobility.

The new multiple units feature the latest accessibility and comfort solutions, including spaces for people with reduced mobility, level access to the platform at all doors on single-deck cars, bicycle areas (up to 6 bicycles in the T100 and 18 in the T200), and spaces for strollers.

These are state-of-the-art, fully accessible vehicles. Level access at 6 out of 10 doors on the T100 (12 out of 20 on the T200), with no steps, will reduce boarding and alighting times and improve passenger flow.
