A major new stage in the modernisation of northern Poland’s railway infrastructure has begun following the signing of a contract for works on the section between Gdańsk Osowa and Gdynia Główna.
The project is part of the modernisation of railway line 201, historically known as the Węglówka. It aims to improve passenger services while increasing capacity for freight trains serving the Port of Gdynia.
The contract is worth €203 million (874 million Polish zloty) and has been signed with a consortium led by Unibep, together with Track Tec Construction.
The contract covers the design and construction of works on a 12 km section between Gdańsk Osowa and Gdynia Główna, as well as a further 1.5 km section of railway line 202, where it connects with Gdynia Główna station.
Funding is being provided by railway infrastructure manager PKP PLK, the Polish state budget and support from the European Investment Bank.
Third track and new railway stops on the Gdańsk–Gdynia route
One of the most important elements of the project is the construction of a third railway track alongside the existing tracks. This will increase the capacity of the route and allow more passenger and freight trains to operate.
The entire section will also be electrified, creating better conditions for both passenger and freight operators.
Passengers will benefit from the modernisation of one station and three existing stops, as well as the construction of two new stops.
The stations and platforms will be equipped with lifts and ramps to improve accessibility for people with reduced mobility. A modern dynamic passenger information system will also be installed.
The works will also include the modernisation of 40 engineering structures, including bridges, viaducts and culverts, together with the installation of a new railway traffic control system.
