DB Regio Mitte has begun passenger trials of its new Stadler FLIRT3 XL (class 3428) trains on the MoselLux network, marking a key step towards full fleet introduction across regional lines in western Germany.

Since 9 October 2025, the first of 19 new units has been operating scheduled services on RB 81 (Trier–Koblenz) and RB 82 (Trier–Perl). The passenger trials form part of the contractual testing and commissioning process agreed with the transport authorities. Each week, the new trains will cover around 2,500 additional test kilometres, building on the 5,000 kilometres already completed during technical trials.
“We are looking forward to the new trains, which will offer our passengers more comfort. The pilot operation is an important step for us: it allows us to test the vehicle in daily service and gain valuable experience — particularly for our staff,” said Dr Silke Janser, Chair of the Regional Management Board at DB Regio Mitte.
Nineteen Stadler trains for the MoselLux network
Stadler will deliver 19 four-car FLIRT3 XL units for use on the MoselLux network, serving the RB 81 and RB 82 routes. Once electrification is complete, the trains will also be deployed on the Moselweinbahn (Traben-Trarbach–Bullay).
The project is commissioned by the Schienenpersonennahverkehr Rheinland-Pfalz Nord (SPNV-Nord) and the Ministry of Environment, Climate, Mobility, Agriculture and Consumer Protection of Saarland. Eight trains have already been delivered, type approval was granted at the end of July, and driver training is progressing rapidly.
“At last, the first of the 19 new MoselLux trains can be used in timetabled operation along the Moselle. We would like to thank all project partners for their excellent cooperation. In recent months, we have jointly found pragmatic solutions to compensate for delays,” said Thorsten Müller, Managing Director of SPNV-Nord.
“With the start of passenger operation, we have reached an important milestone in the new MoselLux service. Our passengers can now experience the improved comfort first-hand,” added Holger Maier, MoselLux Vehicles Project Manager at SPNV-Nord.
Enhanced comfort
Petra Berg, Saarland’s Minister for Mobility, welcomed the new addition to the regional fleet:
“I am pleased that following the barrier-free reconstruction of Perl station and its reopening at the beginning of 2024, the new trains are now operating on the Upper Moselle. With up to 30 bicycle spaces and ample room for wheelchairs or prams, the trains — with nearly 250 seats — offer relaxed travel for both everyday passengers and tourists. A fine example of good public transport in rural areas.”
Jure Mikolčić, CEO of Stadler Germany, added:
“With the successful start of passenger trials, we are taking an important step towards full operation. The remaining vehicles will be delivered successively in close coordination with our partners. We are delighted that passengers in the MoselLux network will soon benefit from the advantages of the new FLIRT3 XL trains.”
Inside the new FLIRT3 XL
Each four-car train can accommodate up to 507 passengers, including 245 seated (20 in first class). The fully air-conditioned trains feature power sockets, CCTV, free Wi-Fi, and a modern passenger information system displaying real-time connections. Spacious multi-purpose areas provide space for up to 30 bicycles, wheelchairs, and prams, while bright interiors and wide gangways enhance comfort.
A distinctive feature of the MoselLux fleet is the “one-way system” for bicycles: each end car has two doors per side, allowing cyclists to board and alight quickly through clearly marked entry and exit doors.
With seven doors per side, the trains enable rapid and safe boarding, improving punctuality. The fully walk-through design includes two toilets, one of which is accessible.
