Metroselskabet has selected KBH Metro Partner ApS as the new Copenhagen Metro operator following an international procurement procedure. The company will take over the operation and maintenance of the four metro lines, M1-M4, from September 2027 under a contract worth EUR 2.27 billion (DKK 17 billion).
KBH Metro Partner is a joint venture between ComfortDelGro and RATP Development SA. The selection followed a competitive procurement process that attracted considerable international interest, with seven companies applying for prequalification and three bidders subsequently selected for the next stage.
Following the submission and evaluation of initial bids and a subsequent negotiation phase, Metroselskabet selected KBH Metro Partner based on an overall assessment that considered both price and quality.
12-year contract to operate the Copenhagen Metro
The new contract will run for 12 years, until 2039, with an option to extend it for a further three years. Metroselskabet expects the agreement to be signed this month, following the expiry of the statutory standstill period.
The current contract for the operation and maintenance of Copenhagen’s four metro lines expires on 28 September 2027, prompting Metroselskabet to launch a new procurement procedure.
The new contract focuses both on operational continuity and preparations for major modernisation projects. The future Copenhagen Metro operator must demonstrate experience in the operation, maintenance and modernisation of automated metro systems, including the renewal of technical installations and the replacement of signalling systems.
“The Metro currently has a very high operational stability of more than 99%. We are committed to maintaining this standard and developing it further. The new contract ensures both robust day-to-day operations and a solid foundation for carrying out extensive modernisation projects on the M1 and M2 lines together with the new operator in the coming years,” Søren Boysen said.
The Copenhagen Metro network comprises four lines extending over 43 km and serving 44 stations. The network is currently operated by Metro Service, which has been providing these services for more than 20 years, effectively since the opening of the first lines. M1 and M2 entered service in 2002, followed by M3 in 2019 and M4, which opened in stages in 2020 and 2024. In 2025, the Metro carried a record 135 million passengers and achieved an average operational reliability of 99.3%.
