The first of four new Metropolis “Boa” trains for Turin Metro Line 1 has arrived at the Collegno depot, marking a significant milestone in the city’s ongoing efforts to modernise and expand its metro service.
Delivered on 3 July 2025, the train is part of a EUR 156 million contract with Alstom and will feature the latest automation and control technologies, including the fully automatic CBTC (Communication-Based Train Control) signalling system. All four new trains are scheduled for delivery by the end of 2025 and will enter service once the signalling upgrade is fully operational.
The train was manufactured at Alstom’s Valenciennes Petite Foret facility in France and reflects modern standards of comfort, accessibility and sustainability. It comprises four intercommunicating carriages designed to facilitate ease of movement throughout the train. Each carriage includes a dedicated space for passengers with reduced mobility and is equipped with a real-time video surveillance system linked to the network’s command and control centre.
Lighting and information systems have also been upgraded, featuring innovative LED linear lighting and multimedia screens to provide both visual and audio passenger information.
Sustainability has been a key focus in the design and construction of the new Metropolis units. Each train is composed of 96% recyclable materials and fitted with high-efficiency engines that lower energy consumption and reduce environmental impact. Externally, the livery reflects Turin’s traditional colours – yellow and blue – set against a white backdrop.
The new rolling stock is part of a broader initiative to upgrade and expand the city’s metro service in line with the extension of Line 1 to Cascine Vica. The current contract not only includes the delivery of four trains but also the CBTC signalling system and upgrades to on-board automation for the existing fleet.
To meet the increased service demand following Line 1’s extensions – first to Bengasi and, in future, to Cascine Vica – the City of Turin has submitted a funding request to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport for an additional EUR 150 million. This would cover the procurement of 12 more trains with similar specifications, plus EUR 58 million for complementary works.
“With the arrival of this new Metropolis train,” said Bernardino Chiaia, President and CEO of Infra. To, “we reach an important milestone in the implementation of this ambitious project, which aims to improve mobility and the quality of urban public transport… We hope that they will soon be accompanied by additional trains in sufficient numbers to fully exploit the potential offered by the new CBTC signalling system.”
Chiara Foglietta, Mobility and Transport Councillor for the City of Turin, added: “The delivery of the first Boa train represents an important step towards increasingly efficient, accessible and sustainable metropolitan mobility… It is a concrete investment in the future of Turin’s public transport, which accompanies the extension of Line 1 and is part of a broader vision of a connected, modern and environmentally friendly city.”
