NEVZ tests modified ‘Yermak’ locomotive

Novocherkassk Electric Locomotive Building Plant (NEVZ), part of Transmashholding, has started type testing for its modified 3ES5K ‘Yermak’ locomotive, an electric locomotive with experimental traction converters VIP 4000D manufactured at the enterprise in January 2018.
The locomotive already passed acceptance testing at the plant and has been transferred for type testing to VELNII (The All-Russia Research and Development Institute of Electric Locomotive Engineering, also member of Transmashholding). The electric locomotive is expected to confirm specifications, incorporated in the construction, during February-May 2018.
Improved design of the locomotive will ensure increased energy efficiency and lower costs of the locomotive. For this locomotive, Electrovipryamitel (Saransk) specialists together with the Irkutsk State University of Communication Lines scientists manufactured a converter with a reduced number of thyristor elements and discharged diodes. Specialists of ‘LES’ (Locomotivnie Elektronnie Sistemi) designed software for managing this experimental converter. The newly installed engineering solution will increase power factor and reduce energy consumption during operation. Due to removal of 16 thyristors from each converter, the cost of serial electric locomotives will decrease by approximately 300,000 rubles (EUR 4,217).
