Network Rail: GBP 84m overhead line upgrade delivered on time

Network Rail has successfully completed a major GBP 84 million upgrade to overhead line equipment (OLE) on the Midland Main Line between London St Pancras and Bedford, finishing on schedule and under budget.

Known as the OLE125 Compatibility project, the work began in September 2023 and concluded in June 2025. The upgrade targeted outdated infrastructure dating back to the 1980s, which had been limiting the performance of modern bi-mode trains.

The completion enhances the line’s reliability, reduces journey disruptions, and allows for more efficient electric operation—cutting down diesel use and improving environmental performance.

Delivered in partnership with main contractor SPL Powerlines, the overhead line works included:

  • 40 miles of route upgraded
  • 401 head spans replaced
  • 108 wire runs renewed
  • 209 balance weight anchors upgraded
  • Over 636,000 labour hours logged
  • An average of 30 machines used per shift

In addition, Network Rail carried out routine maintenance during line closures to maximise efficiency and minimise disruption.

“The successful OLE125 project has been about making the Midland Main Line more efficient and greener. This upgrade, combined with the wider electrification of the line, will mean the benefits are gained over a large area of our railway,” Paul Cater, Senior Portfolio Manager at Network Rail, said.

The project forms part of Network Rail’s broader programme of modernisation along the Midland Main Line, aimed at supporting cleaner, faster and more resilient rail travel across the region.
