Mumbai suburban rail network to be modernised

Indian Railway Minister, Piyush Goyal, has announced that USD 8.9 billion (Rs650 billion) will be invested in Mumbai suburban railway projects, PTI news agency reports.
The projects envisage upgrade and modernisation works on the network, including the existing facilities, which will increase passengers’ comfort.
The minister said that the Government has approved an investment of Rs 60,000 to Rs 65,000 crore (USD 8.2-8.9 billion) for the railway projects across Mumbai suburban network.
The works are expected to be completed within four years, when the suburban network will be completed modernised.
Recently, the first phase of 12-km Nerul Seawood-Uran-Belapur rail line was put into commercial operation, providing enhanced connectivity to Mumbai from nearby towns and suburbs. The new suburban corridor on the Central Railway, is the first phase of the 27 km Nerul-Belapur-Uran corridor on the Harbour route of the CR that extends suburban trains to adjoining Raigad district.
Mumbai suburban railway network consists of inner lines which have connections to commuter and main railway lines, serving Mumbai Metropolitan region. The total length of the network is 465 km, which is operated by more than 2000 trains services and carries over 7.5 million passengers daily. With an annual ridership of 2.6 billion, Mumbai suburban network is one of the busiest commuter rail system in the world.
