Sumitomo Corporation and Nippon Sharyo have been awarded a contract to supply 8 six-car metro trains for Jakarta North-South MRT Line Phase 2A. The contract covers the delivery of 48 metro cars and it is worth JPY 17 billion (USD 111.3 million).

Sumitomo Corporation and Nippon Sharyo previously delivered 16 six-car metro trains for Jakarta North-South MRT Line Phase 1, which began commercial operation in April 2019 as Indonesia’s first metro line. Based on the high evaluation of their achievements in Phase 1, the companies have now been awarded the contract for the Phase 2A train car delivery package.
“The procurement of rolling stock is a critical component that ensures seamless integration between infrastructure, systems, and operations. MRT Jakarta’s trains are among the pioneers of modern urban rail transport in Indonesia. Equipped with advanced features, they provide passengers with a high-quality travel experience,” said Weni Maulina, Director of Construction at PT MRT Jakarta said.
In Indonesia where rapid economic growth has continued in recent years, traffic congestion and air pollution caused by population concentration in the Jakarta metropolitan area have become serious social issues. In response, the country has been expanding its public transport systems. By extending metro services under this project, the companies will contribute to easing congestion and improving convenience for residents in central Jakarta. Further, reduced use of automobiles and motorcycles is expected to help improve air quality.
For this project, the Government of Japan, through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), is providing an Official Development Assistance (ODA) loan under the Special Terms for Economic Partnership (STEP) scheme, making this a project of marked importance for both governments.
The Jakarta North-South MRT Line Phase 2 will be 5.8 km long connecting Bundaran HI (central Jakarta) to Kota district (north Jakarta). The project is expected to be completed in 4.5 years (56 months). As of September 2025, construction of MRT Jakarta Phase 2A has reached 53.32% completion. The implementation of CP206 package will complete the overall system readiness, ensuring that Phase 2A operates on schedule with the highest standards of safety, comfort, and reliability.
In Indonesia, Sumitomo Corporation and Nippon Sharyo will have delivered a total of 144 metro cars for the MRT North-South Line when completed. Moving forward, MRT Jakarta (MRTJ ) plans to construct a new line running east-west across Jakarta with funding support from the Government of Japan, and numerous projects to establish new railway networks in other cities across Indonesia are also being planned. Sumitomo Corporation and Nippon Sharyo will continue to explore potential opportunities to support the development of the country’s railway network.
