Moscow’s second tram diameter line has been opened, providing access to new modern public transportation connections for over two million residents.
The T2 route connects the Chertanovskaya metro station to the Novogireevo station on the tram diameter network. The new cross-city tram line connects southern and eastern Moscow through the city center, providing easy access for residents of 13 districts. The route crosses five administrative districts and connects key locations, such as office centers, educational institutions, medical facilities, and popular recreational areas.
Line T2 has become an essential component of the capital’s transportation network, significantly expanding travel options without the need for transfers.
The diametrical line has connections near 31 metro stations, the Central Ring Railway, the MCD, and the railway, as well as four train stations. The line includes 79 stations along its entire length.
“The launch of the T2 diametrical line has provided new transportation connections for over 2 million residents and has proven its usefulness from the very first day of operation. For many, travel time has been significantly reduced. For example, students from Bauman Moscow State Technical University now reach Chistye Prudy 2.5 times faster—in just 15 minutes, compared to 35 minutes previously. This represents a new level of comfort for urban transportation,” said Maksim Liksutov, Deputy Mayor of Moscow.
Tram Diameter Lines, Integrated with the Public Transportation Network
The so-called tram network with diametrical lines represents a relatively new concept for organizing surface transportation in Moscow, inspired by the model of the Moscow Central Diameters (MCD) suburban rail network.
The basic idea is simple: instead of tram lines being short or ending at the outskirts, they are transformed into long axes that cross the city from one side to the other without interruption. The lines are designed to provide connections without transfers between distant terminals in the city and are integrated with other modes of transport.
Moscow’s diametric tram line is not an ordinary line, but a major urban transit corridor designed to traverse the city.
