More than EUR 100 million for railway projects in Portugal

portugaliaEuropean Commission adopted 11 “Major Projects” for Portugal, together worth EUR 460.3 million from the Cohesion Fund and the European Regional Development Fund. In transport sector there are 5 projects funded by the EC, of which 4 projects are related to railway transport. The total value of railway projects is 104.1 million.
The “Modernisation of the Railway line Sintra — Section Barcarena-Cacém” project is to receive EUR 32.77 from the Cohesion Fund (the total worth is EUR 38.56 million including national co-financing). This project consists of the quadrupling of the tracks on a stretch of 4.5 km, of the improvement of the railway stations of Barcarena and Cacém and of the suppression of all pedestrian and road level crossings along this section. The project improves safety as well as the capacity of the line to be used for the connection to Caldas da Rainha once it is electrified.
The “Norte railway line – Modernization of the section Ovar/Gaia (phase 1)” is another EU funded project that worth  EUR 6 million from the Cohesion Fund (EUR 7 million including national co-financing). This project belongs to the broader works of modernization of the Norte railway line and covers a distance of 36 km. It corresponds to the first phase of modernization of this section, which is part of the core network of the Trans-European Transport Networks (TEN-T). The aim of the project is to eliminate bottlenecks in order to allow the efficient operation of the Norte railway line. It aims at improving the level of quality of service and security with the reduction of level crossings and the installation of electronic signaling systems, telecommunications and speed control systems, in line with the requirements of the Trans-European Transport networks. The second phase will be co-financed by the Cohesion Fund in the programming period 2014-2020.
For the “Norte railway line – Modernisation of the Section Alfarelos/Pampilhosa (phase 1)“, EC will co-finance EUR 22.84 million. The total value of the project is EUR 26.87 million and covers some 40.22 km and includes the remodelling of railway stations and removal of all pedestrian and road level crossings in the section. The second phase (electrification works) will be co-financed by the Cohesion Fund in the programming period 2014-2020.
Lisbon Metro will receive EUR 42.53 million from Cohesion Fund for the extension of the Blue Line to Reboleira. With national co-financing, the total value of the project is EUR 50 million and consists of the extension of the blue line of the Lisbon metro system, between the stations of Amadora Este and the Reboleira intermodal station, which includes building about 0.6 km of tunnel gallery and the construction of the Reboleira subway station (end station). The aim is to create an intermodal station in Reboleira, connecting to the railway line (Lisbon-Sintra), the metro Blue line and the bus public transport system. The population served by the extension of the subway line will increase by 10,798 people and the project will help reduce average emissions of CO2 by 3,005 tons of CO2/ equivalent per year.
