TX Logistik, a subsidiary of the Italian company FS Logistix, is increasing the frequency of its intermodal connection on the Duisburg–Milan route by increasing the number of trains to ten per week, daily, in each direction. Previously, there were six trips per week.
Consumer goods and all types of cargo are transported on the route between the Ruhr region and Lombardy. Each train can carry 1,600 tons, distributed across 34 loading units, in both directions. There are no restrictions on transshipment from road to rail as all types of units can be loaded, from semi-trailers and 30- and 45-foot containers to 20- and 25-foot tank containers. Even semi-trailers that are not suitable for lifting, of all types, can be loaded quickly and easily onto the railway in just two minutes using the NIK (Neutral Intermodal Key, formerly Nikrasa) transhipment system developed by TX Logistik.
Transshipment operations in Italy’s second-largest city will no longer be carried out in Milano Segrate, but at the Milano Smistamento (MIST and Messina) terminal. This change will give TX Logistik increased maneuverability for smooth processes and more capacity at the marshalling yard. This will enable faster processing times and greater flexibility, with improved overall performance – to the benefit of the intermodal customers of the company, which is part of FS Logistix (FS Italiane Group).
In Duisburg, Ziel Terminal, in which TX Logistik holds a stake, remains the main hub for connections to Italy. It is located in the Duisburg-Hohenbudberg port area and has seven transshipment lines, each 720 meters long, two shunting lines, and two powerful gantry cranes for transshipment between road and rail.
According to TX Logistik, the increase in services on the Duisburg–Milan route responds to the sustained demand for freight transport between Germany and Italy. The aim is to offer shippers and consignees greater flexibility and security in planning for rail freight transport by providing additional capacity.
