Mongolia and Japan sign MoU on Tavan Tolgoi rail project

japonia-mongoliaMongolia Minister of Foreign Affairs L.Purevsuren and the Ambassador of Japan to Mongolia Mr T.Shimizu signed on October 22 a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in Tavan Tolgoi eastern railway project and on involving Japan in the project’s comprehensive development.
Tavan Tolgoi is coal mine situated in South Gobi desert. It is the world’s largest high-quality coking coal deposit used in steelmaking, with reserves estimated in 7.4 billion tonnes.
Investors in the project include China’s Shenhua Energy and Japan’s Sumitomo Corp, Mongolia’s PM Saikhanbileg Chimed said in an interview for FT. A 220 km rail line from the mine into China, and a potential 1,300 km rail line eastward to markets in Japan and the US, are also planned, he explained.
