The public transport operator DPP announced that the first modernization of a Prague metro station has been completed, encompassing both the underground and above-ground areas, including the exterior cladding.
The Českomoravská station is located on Line B of the Prague Metro, in the Libeň neighborhood of the Czech capital’s 9th district, and is not just a neighborhood station but an urban hub with heavy fluctuating traffic, influenced by major events and connections to the eastern part of the capital. It is an important station, especially due to its strategic location near the O2 Arena, one of the largest multi-purpose venues in Central Europe. The station serves as a key passenger pickup point, particularly for events, concerts, and sports, which can significantly increase passenger flow in a short period of time.
The Českomoravská metro station reopened on March 20, following a year and a half of modernization and reconstruction work, a project during which it was completely reconfigured in terms of technology, equipment, and design at all levels—from the platforms to the street-level concourse.
During the reconstruction, the Prague metro station was stripped down to its basic structure, and the structural elements underwent extensive reinforcement work. The escalators, the ventilation system, and approximately 120 km of cables were replaced, and 1,600 LED light fixtures were installed.
Completely new design
The most visible change is the new platform finishes. The original ceramic tiles were replaced with glass panels featuring a graphic design by Maxim Velčovský and the studio edit! architects.
The walls are decorated with 143 hand-crafted fused glass panels. Each panel is unique due to the manufacturing technology: glass powder was manually dispersed between the layers of glass, which created air bubbles of varying sizes during the melting process. The elements were produced at Lasvit Nový Bor, in collaboration with Czech glass specialists.
The lobby is complemented by ceilings with LED lighting and a high-reflective glass façade that reflects the original artwork. The exterior cladding of the lobby consists of “copilit” glass at the bottom and glass-fiber-concrete composite panels at the top, according to the design by Qarta Architektura.
A private real estate project is also connected to the lobby, which will continue the development of the area between the tax administration building, the station entrance, and Ocelářská Street.
The modernization also included restrooms accessible to people with disabilities, with access from Drahobejlova Street, as well as structural preparation for the future installation of elevators, which will be located at the end of the central platform concourse. The construction of the elevators will be coordinated with the future development of the real estate project in the area.
