Modernisation begins on Szczecin metropolitan rail network

PKP Polish Railway Lines has launched the construction works for the modernisation of Szczecin Metropolitan Railway infrastructure.

PKP PLK will carry out the modernisation of the Szczecińska Kolej Metropolitalna suburban network, on four railway sections such as Stargard – Szczecin Główny, Gryfino – Szczecin Główny, Szczecin Dąbie – Goleniów and Szczecin Główny – Police. The suburban upgrading project will be completed at the end of 2022.

The EUR 124 million (PLN 530 million) project envisages the modernisation of 23.7 km of railway lines, the reconstruction of 17 stations and the construction of 10 stops.

The works have begun at Gryfino station which will see new platforms, new signage and passenger information systems, as well as a modernised underground passage which will be fitted with elevators. Construction works will also be performed at two other stations – Szczecin Dąbie and Daleszewo and at Czepin stop.

The reconstruction of 17 railway stations and stops envisages the provision of convenient access to the platforms for all travelers, including for the people with reduced mobility. All these stations will be equipped with monitoring systems, dynamic passenger information system and new benches.

In addition, on the Szczecin Główny – Szczecin Turzyn route, a second track will be constructed, shortening the travel time.
At Gocław, a modern local control centre will be constructed and the railway traffic control devices will be replaced. Due to the modernisation of 14 level crossings, the safety will be increased as they will be equipped with monitoring and additional devices informing the drivers about the train traffic.

Engineering facilities, including viaducts and culverts, will be also modernized on Szczecin metropolitan railway network.

The project will be co-financed by the EU through the Cohesion Fund, under the Infrastructure and Environment Operational Programme. In April, the EU has announced the provision of EUR 126 million for the modernisation of city’s suburban railway network, connecting the main cities of Western Pomerania, including Stargard, Police and Gryfino and benefitting 687,000 inhabitants.
