Mexico is planning a 396-kilometer rail corridor equipped with Hitachi Rail systems

Hitachi Rail has signed a contract worth approximately EUR 168 million for the design, supply, installation, and commissioning of railway systems on the Saltillo–Nuevo Laredo passenger corridor, one of the strategic projects through which Mexico is seeking to revitalize and expand passenger rail transport.

The contract covers the development of signaling, telecommunications, surveillance, and operational control systems for the new corridor, which will be approximately 396 km long. The line will connect Derramadero, in the Saltillo area, Monterrey, and Nuevo Laredo, crossing three states that are important to the Mexican economy: Coahuila, Nuevo León, and Tamaulipas.

The project is part of the Mexican government’s program to revitalize passenger rail transport and is included in Phase I of the national program dedicated to passenger trains. For Hitachi Rail, the contract strengthens the company’s presence in Mexico and its role in modernizing the country’s railway infrastructure.

ETCS Level 1 systems and operational control center

The package awarded to Hitachi Rail includes signaling and track protection systems based on the ETCS Level 1 standard, used to enhance safety and interoperability in railway operations. The solution aims to ensure a high level of reliability, operational efficiency, and compatibility with international standards.

The contract also includes advanced telecommunications systems, transmission networks, and CCTV solutions, necessary for the continuous and safe operation of the service. Hitachi Rail will also supply SCADA systems, used for real-time monitoring and control of the infrastructure.

Another important element is the implementation of an operational control center and a backup center. These will enable centralized and coordinated management of rail operations along the corridor.

13 passenger stations, workshops, and depots

The scope of work also covers equipment for 13 passenger stations, as well as inspection and maintenance areas, workshops, and depots. Through these components, the project aims to create a modern rail infrastructure for operating passenger trains on the Saltillo–Nuevo Laredo route.

Hitachi Rail states that all these systems will form a next-generation rail infrastructure, designed to support regional economic development and provide a more sustainable and connected transportation alternative.

Hitachi Rail, with a 55-year presence in Mexico

Hitachi Rail has had a 55-year presence in Mexico’s transportation sector. The company has been involved in projects such as the Mexico City Metro, the commuter rail system, the Mexico-Toluca “El Insurgente” intercity train, and ticketing systems.
