Metro Madrid invests EUR 14 million in access gates and ticket vending machines

The Madrid regional authorities have launched the second phase of the technological modernization program for the metro network, which involves installing 145 new ticket vending machines and replacing 266 access gates in 20 stations. The investment is worth over EUR 14 million.

Work has begun at Ventas station, where the new smart turnstiles are already being installed. The project continues the first phase of the modernization, which included the replacement of 415 access gates and 196 ticket vending machines, with a completion rate of over 75%.

Smart turnstiles and clearer information for passengers

The new access gates take up less space and have a more intuitive interface. The screen displays graphic and text information about ticket validation, complemented by acoustic signals and LED lighting at door and floor level.

The ticket machines feature an ergonomic design and additional accessibility features. These include:

  • easier-to-use payment systems
  • natural language interface
  • inductive loop for people with hearing impairments
  • large screen (42 inches)

The equipment is also equipped with a video camera, which will allow remote assistance via video call directly from the station in the future.

Another new feature is the ability to select tickets based on tourist attractions, without needing to know the exact station. This option is designed especially for tourists and occasional users.

IoT technology and European co-financing

According to the authorities, the new systems are the result of an internal process of analyzing passenger needs and are based on Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, designed to improve equipment maintenance and operation.

The second phase of the project is 40% co-financed by the Madrid Community’s 2021–2027 ERDF Program.
