Metro do Porto selected CRRC for LRV contract

Metro do Porto selected CRRC Tangshan as the winner of the delivery of 18 new light rail vehicles under a contract valuated at EUR 49.6 million.

Each vehicle will be able to carry 252 passengers from which 64 are seated. The bi-directional vehicles will have two driving cabs and will reach a top speed of 80 km/h.

The delivery of new vehicles is expected to be held between 2021 and 2023.

CRRC Tangshan, Siemens Mobility and Škoda Transportation are the three manufactures which have submitted their offers for the supply of the light rail vehicles.

The tender process had the reference price value of EUR 56,1 million which includes the delivery of vehicles and the maintenance services for 5 years.

The submitted proposals by the candidates have been evaluated based on price criteria, technical characteristics and design features, including the capabilities such as passenger capacity, comfort and accessibility.

With this order, Metro do Porto will have a fleet of 120 vehicles, of which 72 Eurotrams and 30 Tram-Trains manufactured by Bombardier and the 18 low-floor CRRC trams.

The increase of the number of vehicles in service within Metro do Porto network is due to the expansion of the network. The company is will construct a new line connecting São Bento train station to Casa da Música, and will expand the Yellow Line, from Santo Ovídeo to Vila d’Este located in Vila Nova de Gaia. The new lines are expected to enter services until 2023, adding 6 km and 7 stations to be existing network, under a EUR 300 million investment.
